Environmental management

ElringKlinger believes it has a responsibility to promote low-environmental impact production processes. This includes making careful use of scarce resources such as energy and water and both avoiding and reducing CO2 emissions and waste.

Consequently, all our processes are regularly examined, evaluated and improved in terms of their environmental compatibility and resource efficiency. In order to identify potential improvements in our environmental management system, we operate a form of global benchmarking.

Environmental key figures are calculated and examined on a regular basis at all the Group‘s sites. This system is being continuously expanded.

Environmental management - reporting and certification

ElringKlinger‘s products and processes are subjected to regular environmental management audits of their safety and efficiency. We also conduct annual system audits across the Group to ensure that all our divisions and factories comply with environmental and occupational safety standards. At all our production sites around the world, we have integrated the environmental management system ISO 14001 into the relevant processes in line with ISO 9001/TS 16949.

Investment in environmentally friendly buildings and equipment

ElringKlinger places great importance on environmental considerations in all its building projects. These include the optimum use of energy and the integration of renewables.

One such pioneering development is our new, state-of-the-art, fully automated logistics centre at our headquarters in Dettingen / Erms (Germany), which has a floor space of 10,000 m². By reducing the distances between production, storage and shipping, the facility allows us to save both time and energy.

Our 1,800 m² administration building in Dettingen / Erms was converted in line with Germany‘s Energy Saving Ordinance. The cutting-edge heating systems we have installed also enable us to reduce our consumption of energy.

Whenever we take a decision to buy new machines and equipment, improved energy efficiency is among the most important criteria we take into account before approving an investment. As well as helping to protect the climate, this improves our manufacturing cost structures.

Another example of the priority we give to sustainability at ElringKlinger is the planned construction of a gas cogeneration plant in Dettingen / Erms. This highly efficient combined heat and power (CHP) system will supply both our production facility and the administration building. Another cogeneration plant is already in use at the new production building operated by ElringKlinger Engineered Plastics in Bietigheim-Bissingen. By reusing waste heat and generating power extremely efficiently, CHP systems deliver a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions.
