Expertise in battery technology

As early as 2008, we commenced work on initial product concepts centered around battery technology.

The focus at first was on components for bipolar lead-acid batteries that are to be employed in micro- and mild-hybrid vehicles. In comparison with conventional batteries, this concept offers higher power density at an acceptable price.

The concept is similar to that of fuel cell stacks in that the individual cells are also stacked together. Special plastic bipolar plates were developed for this specific application in collaboration with ElringKlinger’s Engineered Plastics division.

2009 marked the beginning of development work on components for lithium-ion batteries. This was in response to increasing demands on batteries, especially in terms of their storage capacity. In future, they will form part of our portfolio for use in hybrid vehicles – equipped with both a combustion engine and an electric drive unit – as well as purely electric vehicles.

These newly developed components provide an innovative solution to the problem of connecting lithium-ion cells and modules. We have also developed plastic components for the purpose of cell mounting and covering. This has opened up new opportunities for growth in the field of battery technology.
